Growing our own healthcare workforce, one local student at a time.

Medical, Nursing & Allied Health Scholarships

Building a stable, homegrown healthcare workforce.

The District's Board of Commissioners established this scholarship program to create a stable, dedicated healthcare workforce for our community. It expands educational opportunities for Medical, Nursing, and Allied Health students, and for current Ochsner St. Mary employees furthering their education. In return, recipients agree to come back and work in the District after they complete their training.

Who can apply

  • Nursing students. Enrolled full-time and in good standing, with at least one semester of nursing clinical coursework completed and a 2.75 minimum GPA.
  • Allied Health students. Enrolled full- or part-time and in good standing, with a 2.5 minimum GPA. (Allied Health includes nursing, radiologic and respiratory therapy, pharmacy, social work, athletic training, and similar fields.)
  • Medical students. Enrolled full-time and in good standing at an approved M.D. or D.O. school.
  • All applicants agree to fulfill the Employment Commitment, take part in an interview, and sign a Scholarship Agreement.

The commitment

Recipients agree to return and work full-time within the District's territory after graduation. The length of that Employment Commitment is set in each recipient's Scholarship Agreement, commensurate with the value of the scholarship awarded.

How it works

Scholarships are awarded semester by semester. A Scholarship Review Committee reviews each application, verifies it is complete, interviews eligible applicants, and makes recommendations. That committee is the Board's Chair, Vice-Chair, and Treasurer. Award funds are paid directly to the recipient's school.

How to apply

Submit the scholarship application with all required documents. Incomplete applications are disqualified and will not be reviewed. Include:

  • A personal statement essay describing your career goals and aspirations (300 words maximum).
  • Academic transcript(s). Unofficial copies are acceptable.
  • Proof of residency (driver's license, passport, or voter registration).
  • Documentation of acceptance to your Medical, Nursing, or Allied Health program.
  • Documentation of tuition and fees.
  • Two letters of recommendation (sealed and signed across the flap).

Current application dates and submission instructions are not posted here. Contact the District for current application information.
